Now that your last child is heading off to college, it's the perfect time to turn their bedroom into your long-awaited den. Before you can do that, you need to clear out their belongings. You can't just get rid of everything, though. That's where a storage unit comes in. Renting a storage unit will allow you to pack away your kid's belongings without taking up space in your garage. Here are some steps you should take to make the most out of your storage space.

Label Everything

While you're packing your kid's belongings up, remember that they'll probably want to go through their things once they come home. The last thing they'll want to do is go through every box to find the things they need. That's why you'll need to label everything. While you're packing their belongings up, make a list of the items that go into each box. Tape the lists on the outside of the corresponding box. This will allow your kids to identify the boxes they need by reading the lists.

Adjust the Elevation

You never know when a storage unit is going to flood. An adjoining storage unit could flood, or heavy rains might seep under the storage unit doors. If you're not prepared, you could be looking at a lot of damaged property. The best way to avoid water damage caused by flooding is to plan in advance. Before you move anything into the storage unit, set pallets down on the ground. The pallets will allow you to store your kids' belongings off the ground. If you don't have access to pallets, you can set up shelving units inside the storage space.

Utilize All the Available Space

If you're going to be renting a storage unit for your college-bound kids, be sure you utilize all the space you have available. If you'll be storing dressers, utilize the drawers for additional storage space. You can also attach hooks to the roof of the storage unit so that you can hang things like bicycles and other sports-related equipment. Remember to bring the smaller boxes in last. You'll be able to use those as space-fillers between the larger boxes.
